The Five Most Intriguing Films Now Playing on Satellite TV

When all of the glitz and the glamour involved with a typical Hollywood story start to become tedious, fans of movies like to sink their teeth into something that will bite back at them.  Teenage vampire movies somehow don’t cut it, and many times modern movies just prove to be lacking in substance.  Once every few years, you will see a movie that intrigues you, staying on your mind for months.  If you have satellite TV, you can wade through all of the popcorn junk and get right to the nitty gritty of modern cinema.  Here are five films now playing in HD which will shake up the viewing of any bored movie lover.

5. Last Tango in Paris.  Bertolucci’s daring film stars Marlon Brando as a man who goes crazy in Paris after his wife dies.  After meeting a young woman (Maria Schneider), the two embark on an anonymous, almost dangerously erotic affair.  Brando delivers one of his signature performances as the tortured widower, further enhancing his legendary status.  Last Tango in many ways could only have been made in Europe, and it received an X rating in its time for the explicit content.  Check this film out on premium satellite TV networks like Cinemax.

4. Apocalypse Now Redux.   Coppola’s classic war film was considered too long by the studio at the time of its release, but the director had a lot more in the can her thought belonged.  The result, the full director’s cut, will open the eyes of any fan and offer a definitive version to viewers coming to the film for the first time.  Catch this film in HD on the Independent Film Channel.

3. The Wrestler.  Darren Aronofsky’s film about an aging pro wrestler launched the comeback of Mickey Rourke, but the film proves to be far bigger than its star.  A meditation on fame, loneliness and modern relationships, the film presents a bleak life, but mainly in an uplifting and entertaining way.  Much of its success will be attributed to Rourke’s terrific performance, but Marisa Tomei and Evan Rachel Wood also do fine work in support.

2. The Funeral.  After seeing King of New York, fans of Abel Ferrara should not be surprised that the king of pulp would have a unique look on a classic mafia saga.  Christopher Walken heads the troubled crime family that keeps taking trips to the cemetery and can’t seem to stem the tide.  Something of a family curse seems to exist.   Chris Penn and Vincent Gallo both shine alongside Walken.  See this film on IFC with a satellite TV package.

1. The Marathon Man.  One of the great thrillers of all time will breathe life into any film lover bored of the same old story lines.  Complete with undercover Nazis, CIA agents and beautiful blond spies, Marathon Man delivers the goods.  Dustin Hoffman plays the Columbia student who gets caught in the middle of it all.  Satellite subscribers can see this film on HBO.
