It's been several years since 9 / 11 attacks on the World Trade Center and many of us complacent thinking that no more attacks on U.S. soil never going to happen. But what has been reported from Washington is that there are 10,000 foreigners from states sponsoring terrorism living in the U.S. and granted permanent residency in the U.S. in the last 7 years. So the risk of even more powerful attacks on U.S. soil is only a matter of time. We must trust that not happen again.

This article explores the ways in which GPS tracking technology is used in conjunction with an application called Mobile Collaboration Tactical System. This is and example of the mobile command post of the future to help effectively coordinate missions to prevent another major terrorist attack.

First the Predefined details an exercise during Operation southwestern Pennsylvania steel hammer, a port security exercise to combat terrorism in the city of Pittsburgh.

At approximately 0900 hours this morning, police in Pittsburgh River Rescue saw a small boat moored next to the water inlet The David L. Lawrence Convention Center.

Two occupants were spotted and as they were interrogated, one of the officers observed a suspicious package. Additional Searches the vessel, revealed the existence of diagrams and photographs of Gateway Clipper fleet vessels, suggesting an attempt could be in place to command one of the vessels and RAM in a bridge support and / or detonate a hazardous device.

This was confirmed by an emergency call from the offices of the fleet that one of its ships, Liberty Belle, had been seized by unknown assailants.

A multi-jurisdictional task force was mobilized and multidisciplinary Pittsburgh that included River Rescue Unit, explosive ordinance (EOD), Pittsburgh Police Special Deployment Division (aka SWAT), Pittsburgh Fire Officers, EMS Divers, Pennsylvania State Police SERT, Intelligence Unit and the Office of Emergency Management to identify, assess, interdict, board the Liberty Belle and neutralize the threat.

Thus began the Pittsburgh portion of Operation Steel Hammer, a 13-county southwestern Pennsylvania region (Region 13) exercise to combat terrorism under the auspices of the U.S. Department of Homeland Security.

Following the exercise, quotations from participants steel hammer on the benefits gained from using MTCS and GPS AdvanTraq were interrupted by 'awesome'. Among them: MTCS workspaces and common operating picture enabled operators to communicate, collaborate and coordinate visually, effectively and in real time.

Until the introduction of the Mobile Tactical Collaboration System, the first they had to rely exclusively on radio equipment for tactical communications. Although radios are trusted and reliable, responsive difficulty describing complex situations and strategies using verbal communication only.

The integrated tracking device allows commanders and operators of a greater awareness of the situation of overlapping of the real positions of the dynamic unit on top of operational plans. Our operators were pleased with the robustness, ease of use, training fast and intuitive look and feel of this new technology that allowed them to focus their attention more on sharpening their tactical skills using the tool instead of being frustrated by its complexity.

Campus security for port security, protection of critical infrastructure for border patrol, major sporting events security management for VIP transport of man-made disaster response environmental challenges faced by public safety officials and first responders in the post 9 / 11 world are as complex as they are numerous.

About Mobile Tactical Collaboration System:

Developed with industry standard Web 2.0-based technologies, MTCS represents the next generation of intuitive, easy to use browser-based collaborative command and control solutions for public safety. Because a picture is worth a thousand words, MTCS enhances Officers Public Safety and ability to communicate and collaborate visually in real time using tactical graphics, digital maps, and shared workspaces. Facilitates the rapid design of multiple scenarios, one or more of which can be executed based on real-time contingencies and at the discretion of tactical commanders.

The platform refers to the MTCS 5CS interoperability for tactical operators and first responders – communication, collaboration, coordination, command and Control. This level of interoperability is a must for critical incidents requiring multi-jurisdictional response and multidisciplinary, and needed to related exercises To refine the tactical skills of operators.

MTCS is accessible by authorized personnel in the field using mobile data terminals or ultra mobile PCs through secure wireless broadband, or the operations center and desktop and LAN lines. Microsoft Virtual Earth mapping is the standard image by MTCS images, however, another client can be incorporated.

AdvanTraq GPS and MTCS provide commanders and other senior leaders of an unprecedented level real-time knowledge of the situation of executing an operation and its operators, significantly increasing operator accountability and security. The versatility of the MTCS platform enables it to be used by police, fire / EMS, search and rescue, and EOC personnel in a variety of command and control scenarios. These include perimeter and border security, SWAT operations, major sporting event security management, security response, disaster multi-alarm fire, training and preparedness exercises after incident analysis, and day to day security activities public.
