Dale Begg-Smith is the Ski and Snowboard Australia Snowsports Athlete of the Year for 2004/05. The annual awards was announced at a gala dinner at the Hotel Sofitel, Melbourne, Saturday 30 April.

Competition for the top prize of the night was very tight, with Begg-Smith and aerials skier Lydia Ierodiaconou – both ranked number two in the world – the main contenders.
In the end the prize went to 20 years old Begg-Smith, and finishing as a runner in the World Cup last year also claimed a bronze medal at the world championships.

Had started the season between 18 in the world, with only 13 events of the World Cup to his credit, so his rise to world number two has been one of the fastest in the history of sport.

Ierodiaconou won the Outstanding Achievement of the Year for his back to back gold medals at Mt Buller in September.

Halfpipe snowboarding star Torah Bright won Junior Athlete of the Year, while Begg-Smith, head coach Steve Desovich was named Coach of the Year.

In the category of Media Award, Herald Sun photographer Trevor Pinder won the best picture of the Year for his action shots of Ierodiaconou at Mt Buller.

The Electronic Media Award went to the Seven Network for its coverage of the Mt Buller World Cup.and Print Media Award was picked up by the Daily Telegraph journalist Arthur Stanley.

Keynote speaker at the event was The Hon Rod Kemp, Minister for the Arts and Sports. The awards were presented by Mark Adams Mark Adams Real Estate, Sharry Leanne T-Board Australia, the Secretary-General Australian Olympic Committee Craig Phillips, President of Henke, Geoff OWI Seven Network and Ian Johnson.
